Carl Theodor Dreyer

As one of the key representatives of metaphysical cinema, Dreyer largely devoted his film work to the exploration of the themes of spiritual conflict and struggle, often personified through the suffering female protagonists. His famous masterpiece The Passion of Joan of Arc, till this day remains one of the most outstanding pieces of film art of the XX century and is considered to be one of the milestones of the development of cinematic language. His unique style and contestation of cinematic conventions would later on inspire another outstanding talent of Danish cinema, a representative of the new generation of filmmakers - Lars von Trier.
