One of the UK's most distinctive and challenging contemporary filmmakers, Clio Barnard has won widespread acclaim for her feature and documentary work.

Yorkshire-born Barnard broke through with her mould-breaking debut feature The Arbor, which blended documentary with fiction in studying the life of brilliant, troubled, late Bradford playwrite Andrea Dunbar (Rita, Sue and Bob Too) through her surviving daughter Lorraine.

Barnard kept the setting of Bradford for her seconf Film, The Selfish Giant, which won widespread plaudits for its naturalistic portrayal of two working class kids trying to make money by scrap dealing. Most recently, the devastating Dark River affirmed Barnard's riveting command of psychological drama with its examination of Yorkshire siblings struggling with rural hardship and their own troubled past.
