Sally Potter

"You can't really divorce women's struggles in the world from women's in the cinema. As long as there's hierarchy it means that women are somehow secondary or second class or less than. That's going to be reflected in movies because films are the most powerful medium to reflect back society's view of itself."

Sally Potter

Potter is exceptional among directors in having made both successful commercial features and experimental films.

Besides filmmaking, her career incorporates dance, choreography, music and performance art; these elements are interwoven in her films, all of which - while very different from each other - confront issues around performance, gender and genre and appeal to the significance of musicality and movement in a medium which is in essence non-verbal.

Most recently, Potter won acclaim for her simmering, sardonic study of bourgeois tensions, The Party.
