From our season introduction at the time:
Joseph Losey arrived in Hollywood at the age of 35, formidably equipped intellectually, immersed in Marx, Freud and Stanislavsky, and highly experienced in both theatre and radio. He made several short films under contract to MGM, produced the 1946 Oscar ceremonies and directed Charles Laughton in a legendary first English version of Galileo.
...Four films later Losey fell victim to the House Un-American Activities Committee and went into exile in Britain (where) he produced a body of intense, politically acute work that placed its characters in visually precise social contexts.
