There’s panic in Stepney; from the stalls in the street to the bar of the Red Lion the word goes out: tearaway Charlie Gooding is back from two years at sea, and on the way home to his old stamping grounds. The trouble is that Charlie isn’t up to date with the news. He doesn’t know, for instance, that his wife Maggie has set up house with Bert, a local bus driver, in one of the new tower blocks. He doesn’t even know that the street where he lived has been pulled to the ground since he left, and all that is left of his house is a pile of rubble in a sea of modern flats.
Charlie soon sets his local manor on its ear; from the sunny homecoming when he strides down the gangplank at the London Docks to the final rough-and-tumble in the local at closing time, we follow Charlie’s progress in search of Maggie. When he catches up with his errant wife he is determined to win her back, and return to their old routine of battling, endlessly but lovingly.
