Monroe’s sex symbol status has often detracted from an understanding of her acting ability. In fact, the two can’t be separated: being familiar with her image we can see that her performances don’t conform to the gold-digging female cliché. Her women are genuine characters with their own ambitions, sometimes ironically unaware of the effect they have on men. Her luminescent star quality provided warmth and humanity to make her roles more complex than the comic dumb-blonde stereotypes subsequently manufactured by the studios. Tired of being typecast, Monroe studied at The Actors Studio and was rewarded with a Golden Globe nomination and win (for Bus Stop and Some Like It Hot respectively). She set up a production company to take more control over her career, and we can only wonder at what she might have done next .
