He made his directorial debut in 1942 after a year in a German prisoner-of-war camp. The entire output of his working career was only 13 films, including several that are now regarded among the pantheon of French cinema masterpieces. Becker constantly tried to innovate and differentiate his films, which vary widely in style and genre.
