A relative latecomer to film directing, Andrea Arnold forged a career as a children's TV actor and presenter before moving behind the camera.

Growing up as the eldest of four children on a Kent council estate, her experience of social housing and working class family life would inform much of the content of her work, with particular focus on female characters, always realised with an extraordinarily full complexity and sensitivity.

Stylistically, Arnold employs imagery in a way that is seemingly simple, sometimes to a point of unsettling frankness, but which is continually underpinned by a sense of compassion and emotional detail.

Having won an Academy Award for her breakthrough short Wasp, Arnold won acclaim for features Red Road and Fish Tank, respectively exploring the lives of young women navigating urban and family life in Glasgow and London, before widening her lens to the roads of the American Midwest in the thrilling American Honey.
