Made of highly flammable cellulose nitrate, screening a nitrate film requires a special licence. The upside is a cinema experience like no other. Nitrate film has the deepest, richest blacks and the truest colours of any film stock.
Exhibition of Nitrate film requires a rigorous system of checks and safeguards. The design of this sticker is directly adapted from the nitrate safety signage which has been a fixture in our projection boxes and vaults for decades.
At the BFI National Archive, we work hard to restore and preserve nitrate film for future generations to see. And BFI Southbank is one of only a handful of cinemas globally which are able to screen nitrate.
