A necklace inspired by the original National Film Theatre sign on Waterloo Bridge, made from repurposed silver
We've dug into our design archives to create this gorgeous necklace inspired by the the National Film Theatre (now BFI Southbank). The National Film Theatre (NFT) was designed in 1957 by Norman Engleback and constructed in just 15 months. The original NFT sign can still be seen on the South West side of the bridge.
Created by From The Silver Screen, a jewellery company that repurposes the silver harvested during film processing to create beautiful bespoke pieces and collections.
This necklace began as microscopic silver halide crystals within film. These crystals are fundamental to the photographic process because when exposed to light, a reaction darkens the film strip to produce the image. Cinelab extracts the silver from the film using fixer chemicals, and then go on to use a magnetised current to separate the metal from this chemical mixture. Once refined, you are left with silver in its purest form. Too malleable as solid silver, the metal is then alloyed, to create the industry standard sterling silver, which the jewellery is created from. Hand-finished in Hatton Garden each piece is created with the uttermost care and precision. The jewellery is hallmarked at Goldsmith’s Company Assay Office, guaranteeing the precious metal is of the finest standard. Lastly, From The Silver Screen’s personal hallmark is applied to each piece - the final reminder of this item’s very special provenance.
Each necklace comes in a black giftbox with silver From The Silver Screen and BFI logos.
