Based on James Barlow's novel The Burden of Proof, the film follows East End gangster Vic Dakin (Burton) as he plans what he hopes will be a lucrative heist, while also struggling to get to grips with his sexuality.
Meanwhile, his long-suffering mother (Cathleen Nesbitt) attempts to keep her wayward and vicious son in line.
