Taxi Driver Poster (Polish B1)

A vintage Polish film poster for Taxi Driver, designed by Andrzej Klimowski.

This is an official limited edition authorised reprint from Poland of the rare and collectible 1978 Polish film poster ‘Taxi Driver’ (Taksowkarz) by Andrzej Klimowski.

Born in London in 1949 to Polish parents, Klimowski trained first at St. Martin’s School of Art in London and then at the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw. There, he studied under the ‘father’ of the Polish Poster School, Henryk Tomaszewski. It was at the Academy of Fine Arts that he met the painter and set designer Danuta Schejbal, who was born in London and won a British Council scholarship to study Stage Design in Warsaw. The two went on to get married and collaborate on several graphic novels, including adaptations of The Master and Margarita and Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. After working on theatre and film posters for the Polish state in the late 1970s, Klimowski returned to the UK, where he taught printmaking and graphic design at several art schools including the Royal College of Art in London. He became a professor in 1997 and still runs courses on graphic novel storytelling.

Note from the printing house in Poland: “Our offset prints are made on matte paper similar to the original. We keep the poster formats from the period, we try to faithfully reproduce the colours of old prints. Small editions, limited to 500 copies, respect all copyrights belonging to the graphic artists or their heirs.”

This poster is from Projekt 26, a South London based leading dealer of vintage Polish posters from the Soviet era.
